NGV Gas (Pty) Ltd

Natural Gas Vehicles (Pty) Ltd (NGV Gas) specialises in providing turnkey solutions to all fleet owners who want a proven and eco-friendly energy source that is cleaner and more cost-effective than petrol, diesel and Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG).

NGV Gas sets up Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) filling stations for both the private and public transport sectors, as well as in-house filling stations for large companies.

Its flagship public filling station opened in Langlaagte, Johannesburg, in March 2014, and comprises an information and training facility. The compression facility, warehouse and filling station are all off the power-power grid, operating exclusively on Natural Gas.

NGV Gas will also convert existing filling stations to offer Compressed Natural Gas as an alternative fuel source.

Industrial customers

By the end of 2013 NGV Gas was providing in-house filling stations at a number of blue chip industrial customers that converted their forklifts from LPG to CNG and have reported an average monthly saving of 20% and more on energy costs.

NGV Gas is able to set up compression systems to provide CNG to customers that are connected directly to the existing gas pipeline. All gas supply equipment can be installed and provided at at no cost to the customer, and the customer only pays for the CNG they use. Commercial customers who are not close to the Natural Gas pipeline infrastructure, receive CNG via a unique road distribution system.

Transport customers

NGV Gas is working with various partners, including government and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), to establish projects where CNG can be used as an alternative fuel to diesel and petrol for vehicle operators. A pilot fleet trial overseen by the IDC in 2012 showed a 20.3% reduction in fuel running costs for a dual-fuel bus and a 20%-plus saving on minibus taxis running on CNG.

Phase 1 will see a flagship filling station being established in Langlaagte, Johannesburg and 1 000 taxis and vehicles being funded to convert to Natural Gas.

Besides the flagship filling station, which also operates as a training and information centre, NGV Gas is converting two existing filling stations in Soweto, Johannesburg, to retrofit vehicles and dispense CNG, and establishing one satellite station. In Mamelodi, Pretoria, a further two filling stations will be retrofitted for Natural Gas Vehicles, with the owners identifying additional locations. Each of the stations is able to service 500 taxis, trucks and buses a day at an average refuelling time of five minutes per vehicle. The aim is to increase this to 7 800 vehicles a day.

As a gas supplier, NGV Gas will expand its footprint by working with existing filling station owners to establish their suitability to be retrofitted, as well as with fleet owners who wish to establish their own filling stations.
